Suetonius, Nero, 52
As a boy he studied nearly all the liberal disciplines. But
his mother steered him away from philosophy, warning that it was
inappropriate for one destined to rule; his teacher Seneca (kept
him) from knowledge of earlier orators in order to keep him (Nero)
for a longer time in admiration of himself (Seneca). And so, inclined
towards poetry, he composed poems gladly and without effort; nor,
as soome people think, did he publish the works of others as his
own. Writing tablets and notebooks have come into my hands and
with certain very well-known verses written in his own (Nero's)
handwriting, so that it is readily apparent that they were not
translated (from other works) or written with someone else dictating.
